STRUCTURAL MONITORING

TAILORED TO YOUR PROJECT NEEDS

Understanding the intricacies of structural monitoring is essential for maintaining the integrity of your projects, as we tailor our advanced data acquisition services to capture the subtle shifts and stresses that can impact performance and safety.

INTELLIGENT FREEWAY ALLIANCE, MITCHELL FREEWAY, PERTH, WA

Over a 12-month period (Dec 2024 – Dec 2025), CMR Tech delivered continuous structural monitoring for the Smart Freeway – Mitchell Southbound project, supporting safer and more efficient traffic flow through advanced Intelligent Transport Systems. A key focus was the performance of steel cantilever gantries carrying Lane Use and Dynamic Messaging Signs, monitored under real-world conditions including peak traffic periods, at night and during major weather events to capture accurate operational behaviour.

Our scope included the installation and management of a comprehensive sensor network measuring wind speed and direction, structural strain, cantilever tip acceleration, and traffic-induced wind gusts. This long-term data acquisition program provided consistent, high-quality datasets to support analysis of dynamic responses and validate the gantries’ performance under varying environmental and traffic conditions.

The system proved robust across the full 12 months, with rapid response ensuring minimal data disruption. The results confirmed that the gantries are behaving as expected, with no immediate requirement for remedial works though future provisions such as structural damping remain an option if needed.

All monitoring equipment was successfully removed by March 2026 without requiring freeway closures, and all works were completed with minimal impact—no drilling into structural elements, reinstated surfaces, and sealed cable routing points. CMR Tech is proud to have contributed to this unique infrastructure project and to have delivered valuable long-term insights into vibration effects on freeway gantries in collaboration with WSP the Intelligent Freeways Alliance.

STRAIN GAUGE DATA ACQUISITION ON MINIUNG ASSEMBLY FRAME, PERTH, WA

Precision structural measurement in dynamic, outdoor environments presents a unique set of engineering challenges. Unpredictable weather conditions, moving loads, and large-scale geometry all demand careful planning, robust equipment configuration, and exacting methodology. This project required all three.

Working in close collaboration with Proofload, we undertook a comprehensive strain gauge data acquisition programme on a large mining assembly frame in Perth, Western Australia, prior to its transportation to South Australia for deployment with BHP.

The assembly frame presented a significant measurement challenge: critical strain gauge points were distributed across a 13-metre span, a distance that rules out conventional single-unit data acquisition approaches without risk of signal degradation or synchronisation error.

To address this, we configured dual data acquisition units operating simultaneously and in precise synchronisation, enabling concurrent strain measurements to be captured across all instrumented points throughout the lifting and loading sequence. This configuration ensured complete, time-aligned datasets from the moment the frame left the ground to its final loaded position.

Field conditions during the operation were demanding. A significant thunderstorm during the measurement programme required adaptive equipment protection measures and rigorous adherence to data integrity protocols — a reminder that structural testing in operational environments rarely proceeds under controlled conditions, and that reliable results depend as much on procedural discipline as on instrumentation quality.

The data captured on this project will support informed decision-making around the safe operation and long-term performance of a critical piece of mining infrastructure.
